The line-up of Cotton College's Junior Judo demonstration team. (The seniors had all gone home or were packing - more of them next year). Left to right:
Stephen Mifsud, Ciaron Whelan, Lawrence Anucha, Dean Achom, Hector Nelson, Chiekezi Dozie.
Ciaron Whelan seems to be enjoying himself while Dean A chom applies hadaka-jime The hold was changed and with pressure on so was the expression! (inset)
Lawrence Anucha puts the pressure on Stephen Mifsud with justi jime.
Judo, Dr Jigoro Kono, a martial arts expert, said: `Judo is the way to the most effective use of both physical and spiritual strength. By training you in Judo techniques it refines your body and your soul and helps you make the spiritual essence of Judo part of your very being. In this way you are able to perfect yourself and contribute something of value to the world'.
Judo at Cotton has been fairly eventful in the past two years. Last year we had J Dixey (1st Dan) and D Barnes (2nd Dan) as our instructors. They were unable to come to Cotton during the winter, but we still go to their classes at the Cheadle Leisure Centre on Friday evenings. After Dixey and Barnes came D Harrison (4th Dan) who taught us more of competition and self-defence Judo.
During the autumn term last year we visited several Judo clubs. They were: Michelin; Burslem, where Chugbo (white belt) forced a draw with a green belt and McEvilly fought well; Tunstall; and Uttoxeter, where we had to fight against women as we have no girls doing Judo.
Finally I should like to thank Mr R MacDougall who has helped to make Judo such a success at Cotton.

Chiekezi Dozie brings Hector Nelson over in soda-tsurikome-goshi. With both sleeves held Hector cannot use a hand to break his fall - notice his knees bending so that he can take the impact of the throw with his feet.
