team greatly outclassed. St Joseph's, Longton and Oscott also saw the team up against bigger and faster opponents - and usually well-organised ones at that. But Shrewsbury was a much closer match than the score indicates, and to come so close to Friary Grange was a moral victory as far as the boys were concerned. In defeating easily both Walton and Ernest Bailey we played some good Rugby - and here attacking ability was shown, whereas most of the season was a dour succession of defensive moves and tackles. However, the finest game, where skill and pluck and determination mixed successfully, was against Denstone, where a surprise victory was earned.

The Under 14 XV enjoyed the Rugby season and remained enthusiastic throughout, despite the perennial problem of lack of size in the backs. Larger schools can field physically bigger teams at this age-group, giving them an immediate advantage over us. However, the results are not discouraging and remember that the physical differences will have become unnoticeable in two or three years' time. Everyone in the team tried hard and useful skills were learned to build on for the future.
