Settled in Uttoxeter, since his faith was the governing factor of his whole life, he took a major part in the life

of St Mary's Catholic Church, and was always in the thick of the action. Again, I remember the enthusiasm with which he undertook his duties as Chairman of the Parish Committee. If things weren't right, Paul could become terribly agitated and concerned, just because he was a perfectionist. He found it hard to accept that the ideal is often impossible of attainment. But he deeply loved his church, and everything to do with his faith, and he never lost his reverence for the priesthood, though so many priests whom he knew had been school-friends years before. He never let familiarity breed contempt.

He was of the most kindly disposition, always ready to help wherever help was needed: his compassion and care for the sick and the elderly was an outstanding characteristic. It was typical of him that his last acts were acts of kindness in shifting snow for nearby friends, though he was begged not to do so. He died as he had lived, full of energetic life and concern for others, in the beautiful home where he had found such deep happiness with his family.

The very large attendance at his funeral in Uttoxeter, and the many tributes paid to him were a great comfort to his family, for they had much evidence for knowing that they could be proud of his memory: "a man of gentle manners, kindliness and worth", as one of the many tributes to him said.

May his generous soul rest in peace.

RALPH CLEMENT COTTON SNEYD (1912-16)

Ralph Sneyd was a member of one of the oldest families

in England. The Sneyd family, which started in the days of the Saxons, descend from Ordgan, Earl of Devonshire in the 10th century, whose son, Edwulf of Wessex, married the grand-daughter of Alfred the Great.

Ralph was educated at Alton Castle and Cotton and served during the First World War with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in France and India. For many years he was Works Under-Manager with William Tatton and Co of Mayfield. His Requiem Mass was celebrated at St Mary's, Leek, on 17th November last year and he was buried at Onecote.

We have also heard of the deaths of the following Old Boys: Father Raymond Griffin, White Fathers, (1917-20), Brother John Cecil Della Porta, White Fathers, (1934-36), Hilary Evans (1910-14), Francis Bermingham (1922-23), Andrew Davies (1928-34), William Joseph Murtagh (1932-35), Neil Burgess (1942-49) and Edward Enwonwu (1978).

Edward Enwonwu, brother of Cyril (1977-83), collapsed and died after a cross-country run at Princethorpe in September last year. He was 17 years of age and his Requiem Mass was attended by 700 people.

May they all rest in peace.
