Father Philip Pargeter, after 27 years on the Staff, has left to become Administrator at St Chad's Cathedral, Birmingham. An appreciation of his work at Cotton appears in the magazine. He is being replaced as School Chaplain

and Priest-in-Charge of St Wilfrid's parish by Father Bede Walsh, who has been doing parish work at All Souls, Coventry, since 1982.

Mr Paul Goodwin is going to Ellesmere College to take charge of sports. He joined the Staff in 1980 and in the past five years has done a tremendous job with all sports at the School. He has coached Rugby at all age-groups, but his greatest achievement came in 1982-3 when the 1st XV had a record season winning 22 matches including the `Big Three': Ratcliffe, Mount St Mary's and Ellesmere, drew with Denstone and lost only 3 games. He has worked tirelessly with Athletics, Cross-Country, Cricket, Gymnastics (being responsible for the displays put on in the gym on many Speech Days), and organised all the Thursday activities. He has taught Geography up to `A' Level, helped run Milner House, been drama critic and photographer for `The Cottonian'. In addition to all this, he has managed to play regularly, along with his brother, John, our Sports Coach, in the Moseley 1st XV in the back division. His youth, keenness and specialist knowledge of all sports

appealed greatly to the boys and, apart from organising several skiing holidays for them, he has taken them and the girls on many a social outing in his free time. We shall miss him greatly, not only for the amount of work he took off others' shoulders, but also for his kindness, willingness and sparkling company. He is being replaced in the Geography department by Miss Elizabeth Duffy BA from University College, Dublin.

We shall also miss Mr John Cahill who has left after nine years on the Staff. He has taught Geography up to `A' Level, German and English. Rugby was his great love, next to cycling, and he so fired his Under 15 team with his own enthusiasm that season after season they had great successes. He also took the boys for weight-lifting to improve their fitness. He brought honour to the School when he won the 24 Hour Cycling Race in 1975, 1977 and 1978. In 1978 he cycled 481 miles in the 24 hours; he increased his mileage to 489 the following year, but came second. For these achievements he was presented by the Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent with an inscribed civic plaque.

Mrs Christine Chadwick, wife of our Woodwork master, joined the Staff last September to assist Miss Franklin in the Art department. However, she left at Easter to have a baby and we congratulate them both on the baby's safe arrival on 8th July this year.

Mrs Ann Grant, the Bursar's Assistant, has also left. We wish her and all the departing members of Staff happiness in their new surroundings and thank them for all the work

they did at Cotton.

Another member of Staff to bring honour to the School was Mr John Goodwin on his selection, first, for the Barbarians' Easter tour of Wales and, then, for his inclusion in the English RFU touring squad of New Zealand recently. On account of this, he appeared in a Central Television programme in April this year.

Mr Neil Henshaw's book, `A History of Sedgley Park and Cotton College', unfinished on the death of Mr Frank Roberts, is now completed. There are 275 pages and 20 photographs and the price should be around £6. If you would like a copy, please place your order directly with Mr

Henshaw at the School. The printers have promised it in time for Christmas.

In March £130 was raised in a sponsored swim at Cheadle for cancer relief.

The Editor would like to thank Fr Pargeter, Messrs Henshaw, MacDougall, Coggan and P Goodwin and Kenneth Lo for many of the photographs in the magazine.

We acknowledge with thanks the following magazines received during the year: `The Ampleforth Journal', `The Baeda', `The Edmundian', `The Ratcliffian', `The Raven' and `The Oratory School Magazine'.
