those happy occasions. John (McConnell) has passed his accountancy examinations and may now become a member of the Institute of Accounting Staff and a member of the Institute of Administrative Accounting. John's father was ill when he wrote; we pray that he made a good recovery. Our congratulations to all the married couples.

Mr and Mrs John McConnell

Mr and Mrs John McDermott

We should like to extend our sympathy to Fr Pargeter and his family on the death of his father. His Requiem Mass took place at St Michael's, Wolverhampton, on 5th June in the presence of Bishop Cleary. The concelebrants at the Mass were Canons Woodward and Emery, Mgr Gavin, Frs Pargeter, Austin (the Headmaster), Conry, Sims, Piercy, Allport, Kelly, Cousins, T and P Dennison. Mr Noel Clarke's father died in New Zealand on 4th June. We offer him our prayers and sympathy.

We were very sorry to hear of the death of Dr Barry of Derby, father of Michael, Gerard, John and Christopher. Steve Tarpey's wife, Doris, died in December last. Steve stayed with us at Cotton for a few days afterwards. The Headmaster, a friend of many years, attended the Requiem Mass. Dr J Fielding, father of David, Michael and Simon, died last June. The doctor always had the highest regard for Cotton. He devoted his entire life to public health and a few years ago, in recognition of his service to the community, a school in Boston, Lincs, for mentally-handicapped children was named the John Fielding School. Mrs Margaret Ross, widow of Len and mother of Anthony

and Peter, died in November last. We extend our deepest sympathy to all those who have been bereaved.

The ashes of Reg Simner, late Secretary of St Wilfrid's and Parkers' Society, were interred in the Cemetery at the top of the Valley last September in the presence of Reg's widow, Theresa, his son, John, and his lifelong friend, Norman Adams.

Pat De Nieffe emerged from Oxford last year with a commendable `Upper Second' (as Oxford dons describe the degree). He has decided to resign his commission in the Army and go in for merchant banking or stockbroking in the `City'. He enjoyed the Army, commanded a platoon and travelled to America, Canada and Germany in the course of his service. Chris Parkes is enjoying life at Aston University where he is reading Physics and Geology. He regretted that he was unable to come up on Association Day, but he was on a field trip to the island of Arran. A bearded Olly Smyth called in just after the boys left for the summer holiday. Olly gained a very good degree in French at Durham University. He was 1% off a First and his Oral was the best for years. He hopes to do his MA at Durham on an obscure French poet, a contemporary of Rimbaud. Olly had a charming French girl called Josette with him. His brother, Francis or `little Olly', has been working in a garage but was about to move to France to work in the flour milling industry. Patrick Conway has qualified as a dentist after 41h years' study. Chris Delf is at Cardiff University studying Zoology; his brother, Mark, is studying Sculpture at Stoke Polytechnic College, while his other brother, Kevin, is surveying for the Forestry Commission in the Isle of Man. Henry Soulsby is at Bradford University studying Mathematical Science. And after all those English Literature plays we went to, Henry! Paul Butterfield is in his last year at Leeds University. Bill McEvoy turned up during the Bowdon-Challoner House Rugby match. He has a degree in Sociology from Warwick University and was about to do a teaching diploma at Birmingham University. Seamus Storey is at Aberystwyth University studying Mathematics.

Paul Teebay is at Liverpool Dental School. Robert Coyne has left the police force and is at Strawberry Hill, intending to teach Secondary Religious Studies. Also at Horace Walpole's former residence are Reg Smith, a frequent visitor here who was just off to America on a working holiday when we saw him recently. Gerry Nowicki is there too, no doubt learning the ropes from Reg. Tim Derrington, after a year on a farm, is now at Harper Adams Agricultural College, Newport, Salop. His sports there are Rugby, basketball and cross-country. He recently played Rugby against Dav Devaney's college, Reaseheath, Cheshire. Dav of course was playing for Reaseheath.

Steve Sidwell is doing Business Studies at Stafford College of Further Education, and is an expert at rollerhockey. Chris Lilley is at Cauldon College, Hanley, studying `A' Level Maths and Biology. Geoff Golinsu is in his 2nd year studying for BA Honours in Law at Preston Polytechnic. Paul Ingram is a student psychiatric nurse at Rubery Hill and hopes to become a Registered Mental Nurse. Also at Rubery Hill Hospital are Philip Stonier, Fr Peter's twin brother, a qualified nurse, and Andrew Kennedy gaining experience in psychiatry as a junior doctor. Paul is also taking two `A' levels in English and General Studies. His brother, Gerard, is also doing English `A' Level and hoping to get into hotel management.

Of those Old Boys still at various schools, Peter Butterfield is at the Convent of Mercy and St Chad's,
