Messrs Pierre Castille and Nicholas Baggott are leaving the Staff this year: Mr Castille to become Head of Biology at Ratcliffe and Mr Baggott to go into Business Management. An appreciation of Mr Castille's work here appears in the magazine.

Mr Baggott (OC 1963 - 70) joined the Staff in 1974. He came to teach French, but that proved to be only one of his many activities. He looked after the Literary and Debating Society, taught fencing, umpired regularly at cricket and in 1976 became Bowdon Housemaster. He piloted his House to many a victory on the sports field, culminating very nearly in a clean sweep of the trophies this year. However, it is in the world of the theatre that he made his greatest contributions to life at Cotton. For the last five years, the last three in collaboration with Fr Conry, he has produced the School play. He has reintroduced Shakespeare, given us Moliere, Wilde and the Absurd Theatre. In his last play he appeared in one of the two leading roles, Fr Conry taking the other role. We wish Mr Baggott and his wife, Clare, every happiness in their new environment.

The new members of Staff are Mr Peter Jones, who comes from St Bede's Preparatory School, Bishton Hall, as a full-time Music teacher; Mr Alan Trehern LLB, from Barlborough Hall, to teach Modern Languages; and Mr David Coggan LCP, from Painsley School, Cheadle, to teach Biology. We extend to them all a most sincere welcome.

Congratulations to Mr and Mrs J Cahill on the arrival of the daughter, Maureen Sylvia, on 30th September, 1978.

Byron Costa-Fernandes OSB BA became our first coloured Old Boy to reach the priesthood when he was ordained at Worth Abbey on June 27th.

Mr Harold Prince, Mrs Mary Allen and Mrs Salt, who have rendered the School many years of devoted service on the Domestic Staff, have ceased full-time employment at the School this year. We wish them all a happy retirement.

We should like to record here the retirement as Schools Liaison Officer of Colonel Ernest Edelmann. He has been a good friend to Cotton, and Mr Castille, our Careers Master, was present at Malvern College when a presentation was made to him.

We acknowledge with thanks the following magazines received during the year: `The Ampleforth Journal', `The Baeda', `The Edmundian', `The Ellesmerian', `The Firefly', The Nottinghamian', `The Oratory School Magazine', `The Ratcliffian' and `The Raven'.
