to say other than that the team played well, taking wickets regularly until a sixth wicket stand of 76 runs during which the bowling became ragged and the fielding poor. After the declaration our middle order batting, with only practice on Top Bounds behind them, fell apart and not until McConnell and Doherty came together for the ninth wicket was any real resistance put up in an effort to save the game. After McConnell was out, playing on in a most unfortunate manner, Doherty was ably supported by Dwyer for 15 minutes before finally falling in a moment of ill-advised belligerency.
UNDER 13
The following boys played: M Hearn, D Allen, C Doherty, .I Dwyer, 3 Bradley, M Price, F Ferguson, P Scott, A Trinham, A Jacob, P McDermott,
v Alderwasley. Drawn. Away. Alderwasley 73 (Trinham 3 for 14, Doherty 3 for 10). Cotton 59 for 8 (Doherty 18, Allen 18, Jacob 12 not out)
Owing to transport difficulties, this match was graced by the presence of three members of the Cotton Staff Accordingly the usual feeling in away matches of being like Horatius at the bridge, surrounded by hordes of 'the enemy', was somewhat ameliorated.
When we fielded, Trinham distinguished himself by taking :3 wickets and holding a brilliant catch, while Doherty ably supported him at the other end. The fortumes of the game swung to and fro; while Allen and Doherty were batting. we seemed to be on the way to a comfortable victory. Then there was a collapse in the mid-order batting and it looked like Alderwasley's game. However, Jacob, batting at Number Ten, produced some aggressive strokes and, had there been another over or two, we could well have won.
This again proved to he a most enjoyable fixture; none appreciated it more than the two Cotton masters who spent a sunny June afternoon in deck-chairs on the boundary'
