CRICKET 1969

FIRST ELEVEN

Played 11   Won 0   Lost 7   Drawn 4

This has been a disappointing season; however, not all aspects of the cricket were bad, for the out-cricket was better than for some years.

One might expect a score in the twenties from the West Indies against Ireland, but it is not expected that such a low score will be made against Cotton CC, well as the Village Team might bowl. Neither does one expect a collapse from 48 for 2 to 58 all out when trying to exceed the Stafford GS score of 70. Low scores and collapses arc not unknown in cricket, but it is a bad batting side that makes low scores regularly and, in addition, looks as If it should do so. Excuses could be found in the had weather until June, and the slow wickets afterwards which stifled positive batting, but to find such excuses for 8 matches means that the excuse is for bad play. Only once did the XI make a hundred runs. There were, however, some innings of comparative merit: AI J Barry made fit hard-hit runs off the Oscott bowling; G Barry and Spray had a partnership of 40 against Tollerton: and Want played two neat innings: one against Stafford GS and the other against Oscott.

The out-cricket was very good. A dropped catch. whatever the difficulty, was the exception, whereas in many seasons it has been the commonplace. The opening bowling of Spray and M J Barry was of a high standard of accuracy, both of length and line; their bowling analyses prove that. Dunn bowled some useful spinners, and Jeffries could become a very accurate stock bowler. Two matches serve to show the standard of the outcricket: Mr P Danson's XI were bowled out for 83 in two and a half hours, and KES, Stafford made 70 in two and a quarter hours.

The Captain was A1 J Barry once again and the high standard of the \'1s out-cricket was due to his fine example.
