though, as shown by the pure-bred mice which were intended to produce offspring to be used in genetic studies; despite much coaxing, and against all tradition, they failed to reproduce!

The laboratory was officially opened on Association Day by Ills Grace the Archbishop. in conjunction with this, the Sixth Form Biology class arranged a display of their work, and the Fifth and Sixth-formers showed many interested parents and friends around. Most of these visitors assisted us in our genetic studies by trying their ability to roll their tongues and to taste a very dilute solution of phenylthiourca. All, however, were agreed that this was the only aspect of the now laboratory 'in bad taste'.

In the entrance hall to the new laboratory there is a tasteful plaque in memory of the late Mr John Byatt (OC 1893-97). a major benefactor without whose help the laboratory would not have been built. Most of the thanks for the comparative luxury of the building must go to Fr Piercy, the Bursar, for his skill, Ideas and many hours of work. The brick framework and roof were erected by outside contractors, but Fr Piercy (helped at times by Mgr Gavin, Mr J Tams and Fr P Sankey) was responsible for assembling the benches, for the plumbing, electricity, painting and fittings. We reaped the benefit of his hard work and this, together with the willingness of D Sullivan and ft McGowanScanlon as laboratory assistants, contributed to a most enjoyable (and, we hope, successful) year's Biology.

THANKS

Several friends of the College have given books to the Libraries during the past year. We express our sincere thanks to them. Mgr H F Davis has given us 6 volumes of 'The Letters and Diaries of John Henry Newman': a magnificent acquisition for the Reference library. Mr F G Roberts, in a second-hand bookshop with the Librarian during the holidays, gave the said bibliophile a free hand in ordering books up to a very generous figure. Mr P D E Dole sent us a copy of 'Who's Who', at the same time regretting that he could not find entries for any of the Staff in its pages. Frs A V Owen and T W Dennison, Mr J Brennan and Mr and 'Mrs Clark, all of them in the course of moving room or house, have given us many volumes; so too has Fr B Anwyl.

THE CHOIR OUTING

After High Mass on Thursday I rushed into the 'dorm' and changed my blacks and greys. I changed the various oddments ranging from a tennis ball to my term sheet into my jacket, and almost fell down the stairs In my haste to be first on the coach.

It was raining gently and I didn't realise that this would change the arranged plan for the day. As we started off, Fr Owen told us that, instead of going to Dovedale, we should be going to Derby because of the rain. We stopped at Ashbourne and were allowed an hour to roam around and buy some 'prog'. Here I spent most of my money and I entered the coach, full but with one shilling to my name.

We carried on in the coach and in a short while came to the 'New Inns', which was the hotel where we were to have lunch. The first course was soup, followed by chicken with peas and roast and mashed potatoes, stuffing and a small bit of sausage and bacon added flavour (even now as I am writing this my mouth is watering). For dessert we had apple pie with custard. All this was washed down very well with shandy,
