40   THE COTTONIAN

February 1st. - Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament during evening confessions.

February 2nd.-The Feast of the Purification. Fr Pargeter blessed and distributed candles before High Mass. The 1st XI were victorious in their match with Oakamoor by 2 goals to 1.

February 4th.-As it was raining yesterday, runs were postponed until today-much to the annoyance of those who arrange their sickness to fall on a Monday. After supper, Fr Grady gave the 54 Society his advice on how to judge famous paintings.

February 51h.-The 1st and 2nd XI's played Newcastle H.S. at Oakamoor. Although both teams lost, the matches were very enjoyable. An obstacle in the drain caused the water from the baths to be diverted down the stairs at ten o'clock this evening. Fr Kenny, aided by senior boys, wielded mops and buckets to good purpose.

February 8th.-The three cross-country teams travelled north for their first fixture with Manchester Grammar School. F. Shipman won the senior race, though the hosts were convincing winners in each match. At home, a visiting germ laid low many boys and even sonic members of the staff.

February 9th.-The germ enjoyed itself all day. After supper Milner House took to the stage and managed to entertain those members of the House able to be present.

February 10th. - The gremlin was still on the rampage today, attacking both high and low with gay abandon.

February 11th. - Shrove Tuesday and a holiday. Milner House won the pancake, which the Public Man, possessing an unfair advantage, tossed neatly to the ceiling. The Commancheros provided pleasure for those patient enough to withstand the very slow start.

February 12th.-Ash. Wednesday. Fr Dennison blessed and distributed the ashes before Community Mass. Classes began fifteen minutes late. After lunch there was

a farcical hockey match on the basin field.

February 13th.-Fathers Grady and Sankey attempted a spot of con-celebration on St Joseph's altar this morning. The Headmaster received with gratitude a first-class relic of Blessed Dominic Barberi from the Provincial of the Passionists.

February 15th.-A cross-country match with Newcastle High School and Wolver-ampton Grammar School. In spite of appalling weather conditions, very exciting races were held. Newcastle won the Senior match, with Cotton second and Wolverhampton third. Both the junior matches were won by the home team, more experienced in the rigours of the course.

February Kith.-Mr Brennan gave a delightful concert after supper, including among other items, the Pathetique Sonata of Beethoven.

February 17th-=The Prefect has a new remedy for vague feelings of ill-health 'A run will do you good'. The would-be patients are apparently not so enthusiastic.

February 18th.-Snow fell. After supper Mr Hodgetts gave an interesting lecture on Priests' Holes to the 54 Society and any other interested members of the House. Mgr Foster arrived on a short visit.

February 19th.-In spite of the snow on the ground, F. Shipman won the crosscountry match against K.E.S., Stafford, in a time that was but four seconds outside the School record. Both the 1st and Under 15 won their matches.

February 22nd.- In Birmingham, Fr Gavin attended the Ordinations. Frs T. Brain and T. Higgins were among those ordained.

The cross-country team went to Ratcliffe and won easily. The 1st and 2nd XI teams went also but did not fare as well.

February 23rd.-Congratulations to Fr M. Stokes, ordained today in Hornchurch, for the Diocese of Brentwood.
